Even though I've finished my MSc, I do like to think of myself as a researcher and a creative technologist. I'm very much interested in the ethics of AI, and research that combines creativity and technology.
Look at my academic portfolioOne of the bigger things I do in my life, is designing and coding software. I love coding and how it allows you to create almost anything you can imagine on a screen. I've selected a couple of projects
Find out moreI do a lot of creative things. On my path through the world of (classical) music, I became involved in a couple of opera projects. Which is one of my main activities at the moment.
Check it out!I'm an experienced software developer, currently working a a freelancer.
Previously I worked at Not Medior, a tech secondment company in the Building Heroes family. I worked at Globalinternet (now part of Expereo) and I did a summer internship at Nedap Healthcare. Under the name De Ivo, I work as a freelancer in the production of orchestral performances, operas and other (classical) music shows. I've selected some highlights down here. Over the past few seasons, I have been working with the National Youth Orchestras of the Netherlands, the Dutch National Opera, and the VU-Orkest, and I'm always looking for new exciting projects.
As tour manager for the NJON in the Dutch National Opera's family show Operetta Land, my task is to take care of the wellbeing of the orchestra members, working with the staff of the Dutch National Opera and a wonderful cast. This family show (8+), created by Steef de Jong, builds on the power of imagination and brings the viewers to the magical Operetta Land, a made-up place made from cardboard.
The show has received some very positive reviews, with Trouw ( "The pleasure that rose from the orchestra pit was just as infectious as that on the stage" ), NRC ( "With panache and swing, conductor Aldert Vermeulen, together with the National Youth Orchestra, serves up this irresistible meringue pie." ), and the Volkskrant ( "Operetta Land is a featherlight feast of possibilities" ) being unanimous in their praise of this production.
After working on several projects of the National Youth Orchestra, I became stage manager for the performances of Bèla Bartok's opera Bluebeard's Castle in the Melkfabriek in Arnhem in the summer of 2022. As stage manager, I was responsible for coördinating the practical implementation of the artistic view set out by the artistic team and maintaining the same high standard for all performances.
On this production, I collaborated closely with the artistic staff, the production team, and the technicians. As the production was set in tbe hall of an abandoned factory, I had to find solutions for the practical limitations given by this location. The performance was a great success with six sold-out performances,
receiving a rating in NRC.
To celebrate the 60th anniversary of the VU-Orkest, I took the initiative for a collaboration with the Nederlandse Reisopera (Dutch Traveling Opera). This resulted in a semi-staged production of Puccini's La Bohème with performances in Musis Arnhem and the Royal Theater Carré in Amsterdam.
This production was organized under the responsibility of the anniversary committee of the VU-Orkest. The Reisopera was in charge of casting and supported us with their children's choir and in-house staging director Anne Slothouwer. As head of production I was responsible for keeping the overview in the production process and during performances I functioned as stage manager.
I'm a researcher with very diverse interests. I have a broad background in Computer Science, Musicology and Media Technology. Throughout this academic career I've learned how to do research in many different feelds. I like to keep up to date with relevant developments in my most common fields of interest.
But what exactly did I study? Well, a lot of different things. My MSc in Media Technology, the Creative Science programme of the Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science, focused more on a way of thinking than on a specific field. Within MT, the school of thought is that you do the best research if you research a topic that you find interesting, using the most suitable methodology, and creating the most suitable end-product to convey the gathered knowledge. So, during my studies I've not only written papers, but also built robots, made podcasts, programmed a cookie recipe generator, hosted an exhibition, written short stories etc. etc.
Hello, I'm Ivo. I am a creative generalist with a strong interest in technology and (classical) music, and a talent for software development and logical thinking. I have a BA in Musicology from Utrecht University and a MSc in Media Technology, the creative science programme of the Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science at Leiden University. Currently I freelance as a software developer, producer and stage manager.
I've worked as a tour manager for the music theatre production Operetta Land and a stage manager for the Opera Bluebeard's Castle for the National Youth Orchestras of the Netherlands and as an orchestra inspector for the Dutch National Opera in Giulio Cesare. Furthermore, I initiated the anniversary production of La Bohème at the VU-Orkest in collaboration with the Nederlandse Reisopera, where I functioned as head of production and stage manager during the performances.
In my free time, I play the tuba. I've played in many orchestras, among which the VU-Orkest, the Netherlands Student Orchestra (NSO), the Youth Orchestra of the Netherlands (JON) and I was lucky enough to be chosen to play side-by-side with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra during the Concert om niet te vergeten, a benefit concert for the Alzheimer Center Amsterdam.
